The Wakatipu Aero Club runs a small charter operation Air Wakatipu. As a testament to our training we only employ pilots who have at least completed our advanced mountain flying course, and prefer those who have also done their PPL and CPL with us. Although a small operation, Air Wakatipu has provided many pilots with that elusive first job in aviation.

There are many paths a Commercial Pilot can take, from Scenic Flights and Charters, to Freight and Agricultural work, or even become a Flight Instructor. Training in the Queenstown and Fiordland mountainous environment is an invaluable experience that puts you “on top”. A much higher standard of flying is achieved through specialised training required to operate in this area.

Wakatipu Aero Club has trained many successful pilots who make up more than 90% of Commercial Pilots flying in Queenstown. Many pilots who fall in love with the Mountains stay in the area, but even more have progressed onto flying for airlines all over the world.

Entry Requirements

  • Hold a Private Pilots Licence
  • Hold a Class 1 aviation medical certificate

Licence Issue Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Achieve a pass in an additional six aviation theory examinations
  • Gain 200 hours minimum flight time
  • Pass a practical flight test

Flying Experience:

The Wakatipu Aero Club trains its pilots for employability. Flying around Queenstown requires a much higher level of skill and expertise. Our training course reflects the type of skills that all Commercial Operators look for.
